Let’s get one thing straight: Pirates are awesome! And we are not talking about the ones that steal video games. No, we prefer the ones with wooden legs, a hook on their arm, a sword and a gun that requires gunpowder. This is our Top 5 video games about pirates! So no… this list is not about characters that by accident wear pirate clothes, these guys are the real deal!
5. Risen 2: Dark Waters
Several years after the end of Risen, Risen 2: Dark Waters is a classic action role playing game with a true pirate theme. It has everything, from sea monsters to treasures, and enough swashbuckling adventures for everybody. Sure, the game is a bit buggy, but it doesn’t get more piraty than this one!
4. Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure
Our fourth place goes to Capcom’s Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure. This point and click puzzle adventure game has you go on a quest to find all kinds of treasure. It’s one of the early Wii games that actually was not about wiggling your Wii Mote the whole time. Don’t expect to rob and kill people as the heroes in this game are more the cute kind of pirates.
3. Sid Meier’s Pirates!
We can not make this list without mentioning Sid Meier’s Pirates. It was the first full package with sea battles and swordfights on land, all in an effort to build and grow your influence over the ocean. The original is from the late eighties, but a great remake was published just over ten years ago. It’s still a very good game, Arrrrrr!
2. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
On the second spot we have placed one of the best pirate games in recent years. Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is a gem as it embraces everything we love about pirates. From building a ship and forming a crew to raiding villages, boarding other ships and diving for sunken treasure. And of course there’s lots of booze and women in this game too!

1. Curse of Monkey Island
It’s not a surprise that the Monkey island series is ranked among the best adventure games ever made. While they are all great we have to go with the third game as the number one on this list. Curse of Monkey Island had all the charm of its predecessors, but featured a more intuitive point and click system, beautiful animated graphics and voice actors that gave the characters more personality. The gameplay still holds up today, so don’t be afraid to set sail for Curse of Monkey Island matey!

Will there ever be a pirate game with a female protagonist? Answer: nope. Despite what people would like to believe to protect their safe places, there were many notorious female pirates. Buuuuut that's just 'todays' society. We'll never get a game with one.

The Turbulent Seas
Developed by RawEggTheGreatIX, this is a navy genre game where you can play as a merchant or a pirate sailing the seas in the pre-19th century era. As a merchant you can trade goods (Like iron, copper, fur, flour, bread, sea biscuits, dried berries) by buying barrels of goods at one port, loading them on your ship, sailing to another port and selling your barrels there for profit. While as a pirate you can attack merchant ships, steal their barrels and sell them at pirate outposts for profit. You can craft weapons, cannons, magazines, ammo and other tools to use in combat with pirates or merchants. You can also repaint or add decorations on your ships. You can team up with other merchants or pirates on the server by inviting them to your crew and sailing together on the same ship. There are factions and navies you can join on Discord servers. The game is very realistic with a huge map, great ocean physics, and the ship models are based on sailing ships from real life (With working sails and anchors.) The game has both PC and mobile support, and runs smoothly even on low-end devices. The famous YouTuber known as sebee made a video playing this game in 2021.
